Online anatomy resources for students on sport and exercise medicine course

Doctors who are studying on the Sport and Exercise Medicine course at the University of Bath will be able to explore the human anatomy online using award-winning 3D interactive anatomy software.

An agreement between the University and Primal Pictures means that doctors studying on the distance learning course will have access to detailed, interactive images that will help them understand injuries, conditions and treatments more effectively.

The resource will add to the array of features available to students through the unique virtual learning environment available to students, SEM Online. These resources include virtual clinics, a digital resource library and online support for their community of practice.

Students use SEM Online to access the resources and information they need to complete their studies, and are already impressed with the new addition. “The online anatomy is so much more impressive than sitting over the textbooks I used in medical school,” said Dr Mark Grandison, a GP from York who started the course in January 2005.

Tim Billham, Director of Education R&D for the School for Health at the University, said: “We are delighted to be able to offer our students this excellent anatomy resource as part of the course. SEM Online is unique to this course, and provides a formidable range of resources that help students with their studies.

“Students who have used the system since enrolling in January have really benefited from the communications and online activities that are key features of SEM Online. The feeling of isolation that often results when students are studying by distance learning has been alleviated and the students, tutors and administrative staff have established a real sense of community, which significantly aids learning."

The MSc, Diploma and CPD options in Sport and Exercise Medicine from the University of Bath are open to doctors worldwide. It is the largest postgraduate award of its kind in the world, with centres operating in the UK, Hong Kong and the Middle East. Applications are now being considered for students to commence in October 2005.

Graduates and students work in a range of fields, from general practice and orthopaedic surgery to sports doctor roles including The Football Association, Everton Football Club, British Cycling, UK Boxing, Ireland RFU and some of the English Institute of Sport centres.
