The state-of-the-art, 3D, interactive virtual anatomy software replaced the traditional human cadaver lab that had been in use since the early 1980s. Students get a better look at structures such as joints, ligaments and nerves than when working with cadavers, and the web-based system allows students to log in anytime from anywhere, and tracks the number of hours students spend with the program."

An episode from the latest series of the BBC’s popular crime drama, Waking the Dead, features a fantastic graphic anatomy sequence produced by 3-D, interactive anatomy software company, Primal Pictures.
The programme features a team of detective police officers, a psychological profiler and a forensic scientist. It’s the Production Design Department’s responsibility to source the graphics needed for a shoot and on this occasion they required exciting and advanced anatomy images for a forensic scene.
“The forensic investigation of bodies lies at the heart of our stories. Finding innovative and illustrative ways to do this is a constant challenge” explains the show’s Series Producer Colin Wratten. “Our Design Department did some research and contacted Catriona Kerr at Primal Pictures who suggested that we look at their anatomy graphics. The graphics helped us to illustrate the story points well.”
Waking The Dead is very cutting edge and the series shows detectives finding the answers to very old, previously unsolved murders using new technology. On this occasion, Primal helped them to achieve this by providing graphics that made the teams research look very sophisticated.
This particular episode focuses on a murder that took place several years previously. When the police and forensic scientists succeed in figuring out exactly what has happened to the body, the producers needed a way of illustrating the discovery graphically and it needed to be clear enough for the audience to be able to picture and understand it. The Primal graphic showed an image that gradually revealed a skeleton as the skin and muscle was removed so that the detectives could demonstrate how the bones had been broken during the murder.
“On set the characters use a mocked-up computer screen which is designed to look extremely technological and state-of-the-art. We sent Primal’s m-peg to another company and they were able to import it into the show’s interface and create the visual. The actors were able to tap on the screen and start zooming into the skeleton as if it was part of the technology in front of them” explains Wratten.
The new series of Waking the Dead transmits on BBC 1. Primal Picture’s graphics will be used in an episode entitled Duty & Honour which airs on the 28th April 2008

MARIANA FANTICH ON ANATOMY AS ART
Using Primal Pictures to explore the human body through art

Mariana Fantich is an artist who focuses her work on the anatomical exploration of the human body. “My specific interest is of the inner structure of the body in relation to the muscles, organs, tissues, veins, arteries and skeleton structure,” she explains. “The medium and aesthetics of my work deliberately relates to autopsy and postmortem practices of the skinned, dissected and sewn body.”
Mariana uses the three dimensional images created by Primal Pictures to recreate anatomical imagery in hand silk embroidery. “Every stitch precisely follows the sculptural form and muscular tissue of under-skin structures,” she explains. “The embroidery technique enhances the spectacular beauty of the skinned body and its deconstructed form. It is the ‘portrait of a skinned man. The work juxtaposes the process of piercing fabric with needle and thread and that of the reconstruction of the skin at the conclusion of an autopsy’.”
Mariana views the internal components of the human body as ‘ready-made’ objects that work and malfunction. She is fascinated by the inner structural properties of the human body: “The execution of the skinned body in hand embroidery endorses its dialogue with the constructive and dissected beauty of the human form and its placement and current situation.”
Mariana’s ‘Spectacular Bodies’ is aimed at the general public and her first piece, an embroidered head, has been selected to appear in an international open exhibition called ‘Art of the stitch’. “My work has been selected to represent the role of stitch in contemporary artistic practice,” she comments. “It has had good reviews so far. I think that for non medical professionals, Spectacular Bodies is like a cabinet of curiosities.”
Mariana first came across Primal Pictures when she was searching for medical imagery and three-dimensional medical scans. It was the high-quality, technical images that attracted her to the software and she has used it to create her straightforward, realistic interpretations of the anatomical imagery: “Ideally, I would like to have direct access to a 3d medical scan to which I can apply my knowledge of 3d modelling to give me the freedom to create the imagery for my work,” she explains.
“However, at present I do not possess an actual 3d anatomical model and so I use the next best thing – the Primal Pictures software. In fact, without the support of Primal Pictures, this project may not have come to fruition. I had a great deal of help from the team at Primal and have learnt a great deal. They were very fast to respond to my requests and I am very grateful to them for helping me to achieve my objectives.”

Online vendor admits to selling counterfeit software
Crooks beware: Your buyers might be honey traps!
The Federation Against Software Theft (The Federation) has participated in the takedown of an unlawful software ring run from a roofer’s home in Cornwall. The perpetrators were caught when a Federation member posed as a buyer and bought an unlawful copy of their own software from Philip Rogers of Redruth.
Rogers, and his sister, had been investigated for a number of failed and improper sales hosted on the online auction website eBAY. The Federation member, Primal Pictures, discovered Rogers selling its software and arranged a purchase to investigate. Not only did their test discover that the disc sold to them was a fake, but Primal Pictures found other buyers who had also been sold fakes.
John Lovelock, Chief Executive of The Federation said: “Primal asked The Federation to aid them protecting themselves from this theft of their intellectual property - property that they had spent time and effort designing, creating, publishing and distributing at considerable cost to themselves. We entered into correspondence with Rogers, informing him of our discoveries and letting him know that all our member wanted was for him to destroy the unlawful stock of copied software he had manufactured, acknowledge that he had breached copyright, and enter into discussions regarding compensation.”
His admission of unlawful activity and signing of an undertaking not to do it again would be given weight in any subsequent legal proceedings which may arise. Rogers initially claimed that The Federation could not prove that he had sold the fake disc in question; however as the software creator that owned the copyright had actually bought it from him, evidence against Rogers was easily obtained.
Peter Allan, CEO of Primal Pictures said “As the unique worldwide provider of interactive anatomy software for the medical profession, we have very strict copyright protection on our products. Our software is the product of years of dedicated hard work by anatomists and computer graphic experts and it is used to train medical and surgical students all over the world. To have someone steal it and profit from the hard work of such talented people is unacceptable and potentially financially damaging. We went to The Federation to help us settle this without going to court, and we’re happy that the rogue seller has ceased his unlawful activities so that we can stay in business.”
Lovelock added: “We’re glad to be able to help protect the smaller software vendors from individuals who have no conscience when it comes to stealing their hard work and putting them out of business. These creative firms are collectively the new ‘staple industries’ of the UK. They employ hundreds of thousands of people. If they get ripped off it’s ordinary people that they put out of work, and we are not going to stand for it.”

Mobile 3D Anatomy: A New Concept in Medical Education
Primal Pictures founder Laurie Wiseman is speaking at a conference hosted by Warwick University this week on the integration of 3D anatomy for mobile hand held learning.
Clinically integrated anatomy teaching requires cadaveric material, radiological images and simulators. Unfortunately, it is difficult for students to access all of these resources in a non-academic environment.
In a collaboration between the Medical School at Warwick University and Primal Pictures, a software package for the iPod has been designed that would integrate these teaching tools, whilst at the same time being portable, affordable and accessible worldwide.
Results: A series of anatomy Video Podcasts, compatible with multimedia MPEG-4 players were designed, taking advantage of high resolution digital imaging and three dimensional animations combined with narrative and visual explanations. 500 word multimedia packages were created incorporating 3D simulations, clinical and radiological images. These were complemented by audio and on-screen text explanation, as well as digital highlighting techniques.
Clinical integration was achieved by linking regional anatomy, to pathology and radiology in a clinical context, and in particular focusing on surgical diagnostic and operative procedures. Early studies show a significant increase in short-term recall of anatomical concepts through use of the Podcasts, compared with text-based and traditional learning.
Further studies are required to show long-term retention of concepts and data.

Primal’s 3D anatomy imaging lends itself well to the detailed learning required in an A&P class

Primal Pictures announced today that the University of Indianapolis has selected Primal’s Anatomy & Physiology Online as the digital learning component in an evaluation of traditional vs. online learning tools for graduate occupational therapy students.
The university will provide all students entering the Masters of Occupational Therapy program in the fall of 2011 with Anatomy & Physiology Online to support its gross anatomy course curriculum. Faculty will also incorporate other Primal digital learning tools, including Interactive Functional Anatomy and Interactive Human: 3D Real-Time Body into their curriculum. Faculty leadership will evaluate the class performance against prior year classes.
They will also track individual time spent using the online learning tools to measure any correlation to test results within the group. Students will also have access to traditional learning tools, including print textbooks and atlases, and human cadavers.
“A deep foundational understanding of anatomy and physiology is critical to students’ ongoing success in our graduate occupational therapy program,” said Kate E. “If the program is successful, we will seek additional funding to introduce the learning tools and related curriculum to other health science specialties throughout the university, including physical therapy, exercise science, and nursing,” said DeCleene.

The Visible Human Project originates from long-term project developed in 1986 by the National Library of Medicine (NLM) in the USA.
The project anticipated the digital age and the future need for electronically represented images in clinical medicine and biomedical research and recommended the creation of digital medical image libraries.
Early in 1989, an ad hoc planning panel made the following recommendation: “NLM should undertake a first project building a digital image library of volumetric data representing a complete, normal adult male and female. This Visible Human Project will include digitized photographic images from cryosectioning, digital images derived from computerized tomography and digital magnetic resonance images of cadavers.”
A contract for acquisition of the pixel-based data was awarded in August 1991 to the University of Colorado at Denver.
The Visible Human Male data set consists of MRI, CT and anatomical images. Axial MRI images of the head and neck and longitudinal sections of the rest of the body were obtained at 4 mm intervals. The CT data consists of axial CT scans of the entire body taken at 1 mm intervals. The anatomical cross-sections are at 1 mm intervals to coincide with the CT axial images. There are 1871 cross-sections for each mode, CT and anatomy. The complete, 15 gigabytes male data set was made available in November 1994.
The Visible Human Female data set was released in November 1995.It has the same characteristics as the male data with one exception. The axial anatomical images were obtained at 0.33 mm intervals, resulting in 5,189 anatomical images, and a data set of approximately 40 gigabytes.
The Visible Human Project data sets were used as a basis to create the follow primal products:

- Interactive Thorax and Abdomen
- Interactive Pelvis and Perineum
